Cueva del Chocolate (The Chocolate Cave)

This icehouse, dating from around the 16th or 17th century, is an underground cave in the form of a semi-circular arch built using granite blocks.

The cave is always cold and damp, making it the ideal place to store ice until the summer, using the ancient technique of compacting snow between layers of straw.

Later on, this cave was used to store cocoa for the Suja family chocolate factory, which closed in the mid 20th century.

The cave is located in the Plaza de las Nieves (in English, 'The Square of Snow') so-named in reference to this cave and another nearby icehouse.

It has recently been renovated and furnished as a room for activities and events and can hold a maximum of 30 people.
